Pool Cleaning
A real filter cleaning means opening the tank. We pull the cartridges or grids, clean them in the right order, check the parts and bring your filter back to its clean pressure.

What's included
Most filter calls start with the pressure gauge. It reads well above where it used to sit, the return jets feel weak, the cleaner drags along the floor and the water carries a haze that shock does not clear. Often the tank has not been opened in a year, and a quick backwash has been standing in for a real pool filter cleaning.
A loaded filter costs more than clear water. The pump pushes against it all day, runs hotter and wears out sooner, and the power bill goes up with it. In Middle Tennessee, spring pollen, summer storms and fall leaves pack cartridges and DE grids quickly. Left too long, pleats collapse, grids tear and dirt goes straight back into the pool.
When Passion Pool Care cleans a filter, the tank comes apart. Cartridges and DE grids are pulled, hosed, degreased and only acid cleaned if minerals remain. We check the o-ring, air relief and manifold, recharge DE filters with the right amount of powder and give sand filters a full backwash. Then we reassemble, run it up to pressure and note the clean starting number.
Is it time?
The pressure gauge tells most of the story, and the water and equipment pad tell the rest.
01
Your pool filter gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above its clean starting pressure.
02
Return jets feel weak or your pool cleaner barely moves across the floor.
03
Cloudy pool water will not clear even after chlorine and shock.
04
DE powder or fine dirt blows back into the pool through the return jets.
05
Filter pressure climbs again within a few days of a backwash.
06
Nobody has opened the pool filter tank in a year or more.
Filter know-how
The honest answer is a number on the gauge, not a date on the calendar. Every filter has a clean starting pressure. When the gauge climbs 8 to 10 psi above it, the filter is loaded and needs a backwash or a full cleaning, whether it is cartridge, DE or sand. Around Nashville that usually lands two or three times a swim season, with extra cleanings after heavy spring pollen, a big storm or an algae bloom. On our weekly routes the gauge is read every visit, so the cleaning happens when the number calls for it.
A cartridge is pleated fabric, and two things clog it. Oils from sunscreen, sweat and pollen coat the fabric first, then minerals can crust on top. The order of cleaning matters. Acid on an oily cartridge locks the oil into the fabric for good. So each cartridge is hosed pleat by pleat, soaked in a filter degreaser and rinsed, and only gets an acid soak if minerals remain. A cartridge with firm pleats and sound end caps goes back in. One with collapsed pleats, cracked caps or torn bands should be replaced.
A DE filter uses cloth grids coated with diatomaceous earth powder, which catches the finest particles of any pool filter. A backwash dumps some of the old powder but leaves the rest caked on the grids. A real DE filter cleaning opens the tank, pulls the grid assembly, hoses and degreases every grid and checks each one for tears. The grids are then recoated with the right amount of fresh powder. Too little powder leaves grids exposed and pressure climbs fast. A torn grid or cracked manifold shows up as a white cloud at the return jets.
A sand filter cleans itself by backwashing, which lifts the sand bed and sends trapped dirt to waste. A proper backwash runs until the sight glass clears, then a rinse settles the bed before the valve goes back to filter. Backwashing too often wastes water, and too rarely packs the bed. Over time oils and minerals glue sand into clumps and water cuts channels through it, so dirt passes straight back to the pool. When a backwash no longer clears the water, the sand itself needs replacing, which is a separate sand change job.
The pump does not know the filter is dirty. It keeps pushing against more resistance, which means more heat, more amps and faster wear on the motor and the pump seal. On a variable speed pump, it means running faster for longer to hit the same flow. The water suffers too. A loaded filter cannot clear the water no matter how much chlorine goes in, so owners keep buying shock for a filter problem. Chlorine tablets in the skimmer make it worse, sending harsh water straight through the equipment and wearing out cartridge fabric and grid cloth.

FAQ

Clean the pool filter when the gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above its clean pressure. For most Nashville pools that means two or three times a season, plus after heavy pollen, storms or an algae bloom.
Every filter is different, so we give a free, no-obligation quote for pool filter cleaning. Call (615) 624-7624 with your filter type and gauge reading.
For a sand filter, a backwash is the cleaning. A DE filter still needs the tank opened because a backwash leaves grids caked, and a cartridge filter cannot be backwashed at all.
Only after the cartridge has been degreased, and only if minerals remain. Acid on an oily cartridge sets the oil into the fabric, and most cartridges never need the acid step.
A torn grid, cracked manifold or bad gasket in the DE filter is letting powder pass through. The grid assembly has to come out to find which part failed.
High pressure after a pool filter cleaning usually points to a partly closed valve, a clogged pump basket, too much DE powder or minerals left in the element. Sometimes the gauge itself is stuck.
A set day every week: water balanced, walls brushed, baskets emptied and equipment checked.
Spa water balanced on its own, jet lines flushed, shell scrubbed and filter cleaned on every drain.
Waterline calcium, stains and scum removed from tile, spillways and rock without draining the pool.
